After spending the early morning & afternoon engulfed in the world of fashion with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park, I thought it would be a nice change of scenery to check out some of the great art openings & events in Chealsea. Like fashion, the art world also starts it’s season in September and my first stop was the highly anticipated opening of Juergen Teller’s “Paradis” at Lehman Maupin, where there so many well dressed patrons in attendance that I almost forgot to look at the art.
All of their drool-worthy avant-garde accoutrements got my conscience back on fashion so I headed to Soho, where I personally think New York’s best shops are housed. I started at Longchamp not only because I love Lykke Li (who was a guest dj alongside a jazz band) but also because Longchamp’s deco inspired curved shop is so beautiful that it’s great to get any excuse to hang out there.
Then I headed to Opening Ceremony’s jam-packed block party where there were about a thousand of the cities best dressed citizens with designers Proenza Schouler and Kate & Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte humbly mingling with the crowd. Seeing designers of that status interspersed with throngs of shoppers got me thinking that no matter what the economy is like, fashion is about good fun and I had a beautiful time. – Naveed Hussain
