The FocusOnStyle Blog
Helping You + Your Business Get Out There!

Make it your business to live your dream…

I inadvertently started my blog during my infant son’s nap time back in 1999… before the term ‘blog’ was even popular.

Through it all, I believe…

Your style is your fingerprint in all that you do… it’s how you see the world + how the world perceives you.

The blog archives go back to the beginning and are updated regularly.  You’ll find 1,000’s of posts about modern business, branding, positioning, marketing, photos, fashion, style, beauty, lifestyle… and most importantly, how to do anything authentically. Enjoy!

The V.I.P. crowd gathered close to the store while most of Fifth Avenue was jam-packed waiting for the big "Holiday on Ice" theme reveal. Several red-clad acrobats appeared from upper store windows and scaled down the facade of Bergdorf's, Spider-Man style.  With the crazy wind

When it’s time to replace your best cashmere sweater…

C by Bloomingdale's Cashmere Turtleneck
Let's help this reader understand how to identify types of cashmere & replace her best cashmere sweater with something fresh. Dear Sharon: I visited your video on cashmere. I would like to add a cashmere piece to my wardrobe each year. I have a very favorite turtleneck that I purchased in a cashmere specialty store in Manhattan about 15 years ago. I bought it on sale and I cannot find anything like it again. The more I wash it the softer it gets. If I can at least identify the type and ply perhaps I would know what to shop for. Can I send it to you for your advice on what it is exactly and where I may acquire one like

Warning: You may be blinded by desire! Jewelry by JAR dazzles at the Met

I daresay that even the most glitz phobic could not help but  be wowed by this exhibition. I ran up to see the press preview of Jewelry by JAR at The Metropolitan Museum of Art this morning and barely wanted to leave the show. Honestly, I could have spent the day soaking up the radiant jewels on display and although I didn't get a ring to 'put on it,' I did come back with a tome to explore on the way home… A native New Yorker, Harvard educated Joel A. Rosenthal, based in Paris, has worked under the name Jewels by JAR with this being his first stateside retrospective exhibition with over 400 pieces on hand. What started out as

Beyond the Fashion Pack: Don’t miss the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit

Follow my blog with Bloglovin See inside the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit 'From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk' at the Brooklyn Museum Hard not to admit that this costume exhibition is close to my heart. Waxing nostalgic, as a Brooklyn native, my mom used to take me to art classes at the Brooklyn Museum. It's architecturally a gorgeous regal museum that's a houses an excellent permanent collection of Egyptian art as well as an incredible Rodin collection. I chose to wear Jean Paul Gaultier in this "back in the day" magazine article about me where I am quoted as saying, "There's no point wearing jewelry unless it is weird, or at least, unusual." And, then there was the 80s and on.

Richard turned the table for my take on Parisian Style Tips

A surprise party that Richard threw for me, back in the day!
Most of you know Richard Nahem as our Paris insider. He runs the very successful Parisian style & what to do in Paris blog Eye Prefer Paris when he's not taking a lucky few around the Marais for one of his personalized walking tours over at Eye Prefer Paris Tours. BUT, I've known Richard forever. Way back from a high school spring break trip to Florida kind of forever. We met while sitting it out on a fiberglass bench while bored to death at Jai-Alai and have disco-ed our way as friends ever since. (Secret: Richard can identify almost any disco song from the first three beats). This time, Richard turned the tables on me as he knows what a French

Style inspiration beyond fashion

Salomé calling... Hubby & I did a little stroll around the Metroploitan Museum of Art the other night.  The Kid is getting older and he's not too keen to do every family outing. I walked passed Salomé by Henri Regnault (oil on canvas, 1870) and felt like I stumbled upon an old friend. You see, once upon a time, before my husband, before my son who lost interest in museum visits, I found a kindred spirit in the gypsy Boho allure of this painting. Back in that day, my apartment was rather electric with a Victorian/Gypsy/Textural vibe, kinda like Salomé. I felt a kinship to the old girl and was inspired by the style of the painting that suited me, at the time, just
