In their words...
Collection Inspiration
“For this collection, I thought about the lifestyle of young men, not necessarily in age, but in spirit: people who live fast, travel intensively and want to look smart, but never uptight. My interpretation of their needs is a flexible wardrobe made of light pieces that have a soft, worn-in touch to them; clothing that is subtly luxurious as it is easy to layer and adapt to one’s own personality. A long knit coat might end under a double-breasted suit jacket in the morning, and on top of it at night, because that’s how men really dress themselves today. Perfect and imperfect, day and night, elite and street are mixed into a new, single whole. The feel is urban, with romance underneath still burning bright” says designer John Varvatos of his fall/winter 2010/11 collection.
Silhouette.
A weightless imposition of layers. Suits, outerwear, knitwear, leather pieces are freely mixed in every outfit with total disregard of traditional rules.
Jackets and outerwear.
Soft and weightless, cut close to the body, with a raised armhole and narrow shoulder, but never too tight.
Double-breasted jackets are totally devoid of extra fillings and padding, single-breasted three-button ones have metal wire lining the collar for a crumpled effect, or are closed with French-cuff style buttoning. Fine wool checked shirts with small collars are worn underneath.
Military-inspired, zippered-up field jackets and elongated, 3/4 coats sport John Varvatos signature dropped neckline, and are closed with tape buttons.
Hooded parkas are cut long and narrow, and also come without sleeves for layering.
Dinner jackets are made in washed moleskin, but still sport satin lapels. They are paired with crisp white shirts.
Trousers.
Sleek, not skinny.
Combat trousers made in luxurious suiting fabrics are cuffed and zipped at the hem. Jeans are clean, coated and pristine.
Knitwear.
Uncompromising: either chunky and thick, or gauzy and thin. Long cardigan-jackets. Crewnecks. Vests. Fingerless gloves.
Leather.
Worn-in and beaten-up.
Body-hugging washed lambskin blousons. Washed and burnished suede trenches. Brushed shearling pieces have a luxurious cashmere-like feel.
Fabrics.
Washed and soft, arranged in a constant mismatch of checks, glen plaids and traditional patterns seen anew.
Cashmere. Velvet. Moleskin. Twisted yarns create distorted patterns.
Colors.
Romantic and urban.
Shades of gray: slate, concrete, pearl. Wine red. Purple. Steel Blue. Black.
Accessories.
Fabric flowers with zippered details are pinned on the jackets’ lapels. Washed wingtip boots. Sandblasted boots and shoes with matching gators. Oversized totes with intarsia made from vintage belts or with studded details.
