Vera Wang Pre-Fall 2010
Taking a smart departure from her arty inclinations Vera Wang's recent outing was a take on urban-minded gear somewhat borrowed from the boys in moody gray's and standard blacks. From boy blazers to military inspired parkas and plenty of pretty 20's inspired sequined cob-webby evening looks (giving Rodarte a run for their money?), Wang's range was expansive and right-on. One of us has been on the look-out for inventive uses of fur, and Wang's gray fuss-free parka with it's Mongolian fur patched pockets may just be exactly what we were looking for.
Celine Pre-Fall 2010
After a decade of over-wrought maximalism and heavy-handed "urban warrior" propositions, Phoebe Philo's clean, cool and confident outings at the once quiet Parisian house Celine are filled with the kind of pragmatic sportswear and luxe-low key essentials that have won her a bevy of fans worldwide. Mariner sweaters, laser-cut leather outerwear, smart uses of fur, who would have ever thought that classic minimalism of this ilk could once again look so fresh? Long story short, Philo is a woman designing very smart, alluring pieces for women. We want everything.
Thakoon Pre-Fall 2010
In just a few short seasons New York label Thakoon has won a steady following thanks to the designer's penchant for mixing the tough city girl silhouettes we've grown to love with something more decidedly feminine, from florals to fringe. He stated that his Pre-Fall outing was intended to evoke warmth through the use of fabrics that envelop the body, and thankfully this didn't mean strict body-con. Instead there was a breezy languid flou in his asymmetrical floral sheaths and layering options came without the expected bulk, something women of any age, in any city can appreciate.
Missoni Pre-Fall 2010
After a few hit-or-miss seasons of tweaking her family's legendary heritage, Angela Missoni was back full force with one of the smartest winter oriented collections we have seen in a long while. The house's signature flame stitch knits were used in a variety of head-to-toe looks that looked more calm and collected than the disheveled powder faced Victorian doll of season's past. Each look was layered with multi-tasking softly structured graphic sweater coats, blanket skirts, tweed suiting and scores of layering essentials that came in a soothing color palette of warm corals balanced by various grays.
Diane Von Furstenburg Pre-Fall 2010
Diane Von Furstenburg's Pre-Fall collection by creative director Nathan Jenden has taken the affordable, completely diplomatic label in all kinds of globe-trekking directions from Ibiza to Russia to uber-kawaii rather than what we loved about the DVF in the first place. That being said, Jenden cited model Stella Tennant and British "It" girls as inspiration for Pre-Fall and we have to say, it seems as if it was the right direction. Layering disparate pieces like an antique-y sequined Deco inspired frock under a mannish over-sized parka felt fresh and easy to manage although familiar(not such a bad thing when something is done well) while a wide brown Buffalo plaid jacket with an asymmetrical front had at least one of our names written all over it. After a long while, this collection offered something for everyone rather then the usual girl-out-on-the-town. --Naveed Hussain, VagabondNyc
