It’s time to rethink shearling as a fashion choice.

There’s nothing like a frigid day to ruin your coat style. All the clever layering, chic scarves, and general sense of looking great in the cold is gone once the winter chill starts to really kick in.

Shearling coats are a fantastic option but for the last few years it is all too common for them to get a bad design rap.

They are the typically stylishly forgotten items left to “sheepskin and leather” emporiums in affluent ski towns. The coats with the shawl collars, narrow shoulders, and oddly oversized armholes, usually in a shade of melted chocolate.

Or, they are over designed to an inch of their vanity fur trimmed lives. Either way, it’s a big style eech.

We’ve been dreaming of a shearling coat worthy of our wearing it and it’s been pretty slim pickings to make the investment. Then, we spotted Keira Knightley wearing her Burberry shearling coat on her way out of the Comedy Theatre after the opening night of her new play The Misanthrope in London.

And we love it.

Her taupe double-breasted, large collar shearling coat has all the hallmarks of gorgeous, modern coat and just happens to be warm, cuddly, and timeless too. She’s pairing it with slim jeans and an infinity scarf which picks up on the country casual trend but it can easily be worn of more tailored clothing.

The winter chill is starting and there’s no time better than the present to see some gorgeous shearling coats worthy of city style. There are faux shearling styles and vintage fluffy shearling coats that are looking right again too.
