Anyway, I want an idea really fast…I’m in need of a new look pronto. Please help me with my hair problem. Wait! I have long, straight hair and I don’t want it to be curly so please keep that in mind. Thanx a lot. —From Hair to Eternity (Forest Lake, Minnesota)

Forget about anything that’s rigid, contrived, or overly done. Ultra modern hair has so many style choices and all are free-flowing, touchable, easy going and absolutely soft, beckoning to have some fingers run through it.

From the sweetest play on school girl tresses to the new twist on big hair, Mick Jagger sums it up best, it’s all about “Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty, girl” hair.

Yes, yes, we all love to know what’s going on behind the scenes, so I‘ve enlisted the team from bumble & Bumble to share their backstage secrets, notes and all, plus a bounty of their final products: runway hairstyle photos to inspire. Plus, there’s some how-to ideas to get your blow dryers running!

Okay, pencils up… here’s the bumble & Bumble Cheat Sheets for the top hair trends right now:

Buns are done…then undone in subtle, sexy ways. Wisps and tendrils untamed themselves from chignons and unfussy French twists on the runways at J. Mendel, Perry Ellis, Roland Mouret, Alice Roi, Lela Rose and others, lending the ladylike clothes a morning-after edge. “Even if you’re doing a do, you have to destroy it a little,” says Jimmy Paul, who used Styling Lotion and Thickening Spray for shape, plus plenty of Surf Spray for that mussed-up texture. ROLLER GIRLS (photo gallery for this look)
It was Lord of the Ringlets meets Valley of the Dolls as thick, touchable curls cascaded over Fall’s filmy fabrics and seductive shapes. Bigger was better at Carlos Miele, Richard Tyler, David Rodriguez, United Bamboo and Tuleh. At Rebecca Taylor, Dennis Lanni made waves using tissue-paper rollers (Thickening Spray, Gloss and heavy back-combing did the rest), while at Vivienne Tam, he crimped models’ styles by flat-ironing braided hair sprayed with Does It All, then fluffing it out for fairytale kink. As with all curls, Holding Spray is key. (Buy Bumble and bumble hair products)

Up, up and away… Smooth, elegant Hollywood blowouts and off-the-face uptown do’s showcased the high collars and low-cut gowns at Bill Blass, Marc Bouwer, Mackage and Yigal Azrouel without a hair out of place. Backstage, buildup from previous shows was removed with Tonic Spray, deep parts were smoothed with Styling Lotion and the light of flashbulbs was reflected with Gloss. Straight parts and smooth ends flunked out as late-for-class looks rolled on to the runways. Barrettes were back at Generra, where strands of teased, center-parted hair were thickened with Surf Spray and pulled off the face, while Pringle’s blushing British schoolgirls gave their teen-simple styles a smoother sheen with Grooming Creme and a hint of Gloss. At Cynthia Steffe, Laurent Philippon used Styling Lotion with a hint of Styling Wax and Hair Powder to shape a low-riding ponytail, some of which were tucked into models’ jackets. “It looks spontaneous, approachable, like a real modern woman,” says Philippon.
