I’ve definitely come across girls with weird cartoon-like contacts on but haven’t paid much mind to this odd looking beauty fad. However, when the front page of today’s The New York Times has a story about circle lenses becoming mainstream, it’s time to take notice… well, without popping a mega contact lens in for solidarity.
The circle contact lens covers part of the white of the eye enlarging the area that a normal contact lens would cover and thus creating the cartoon look. It’s not unusual for circle lenses to be in jarring colors to make them appear even more out-of-this-worldly.
Googly eyes are a popular trend in Japan, Singapore and South Korea and now taking on impressionable high school and college fans stateside thanks to Lady Gaga in her “Bad Romance” video.
No surprise that “Consumers risk significant eye injuries — even blindness” states Karen Riley, a spokeswoman for the F.D.A., the NYT article. But when it comes to a fad there are those who would risk possible injury just to look cool… errr, stupid.
