Lady Gaga Fans Camp Out Overnight For TODAY Show Concert

Polls Are Closed: Little Monsters could not care less about all those iconic references

I found myself having a lunch meeting in Rockefeller Plaza today- about 18 hours before Lady Gaga is to have her outdoor concert on the TODAY Show tomorrow morning. There was a line of intensely devoted fans– from teens to families– that already went down the street. Mind you that it’s boiling hot outside and camping out on a Midtown Manhattan street overnight and then some is not the most glamorous experience, even if you are under a makeshift tent.

For me, Lady Gaga’s costumes are often a bit déja vu. I love when she teams up with Giorgio Armani or other design masters for something fresh and fantastical, but more often than not her costumes– on and off stage– are a mélange of the kooky glam years on either side of 1980.

I wonder if her infatuated fans get the iconic references or even care. The answer is NO, at least from my very random survey to the Little Monsters waiting in the heat.

SH: Why are you waiting overnight outside in the miserable heat?
Random Fan: It’s Gaga!!!

SH: Has anyone heard of Leigh Bowery?
Random Fan(s): Deaf ears…

SH: That’s L-E-I-G-H Bowery, like the street.
Random Fan: Huh?

SH: He was a performance artist.
Random Fan: What’s that?

SH: What about Grace Jones?
Random Fan: Oh, I think I’ve heard of her.

SH: Do you know about the Club Kids?
Random Fan: Wasn’t that a movie?

SH: Does she remind you of early Madonna, especially some of her videos?
Random Fan: Well, Lady Gaga says Madonna inspires her.

I asked my kid and his friend what they made of all of this:

My Kid: So, they’re hobos for 18 hours.
His Friend: Could not pay me to do that.
My Kid: Why is that guy wearing a Michael Jackson glove to be Lady Gaga?

Case closed.
