I’ll Have What She’s Having: Erin O’Connor in Harem Pants

Harem pants or voluminous pegged leg pants are tricky to pull off. More times than not you end up looking like you swiped the pants right off the back of Bozo the Clown... yikes! But when worn just the right way, as Erin O'Connor demonstrated on her way into the Vivienne Westwood Red Label Show during London Fashion Week, the end result is sublime. Here's why... Counterbalance extreme volume on one part of your body with something shaped on your other half. A boxy jacket in a contrasting color would add bulk, like it did in Sienna Miller's case. However, Erin selected a a jacket with a fitted waist, strong shoulders, and an open V-neck in a in the same

NY Fashion Week: Derek Lam Spring / Summer 2010

Derek Lam makes serious, luxe clothing that's quiet in statement and meticulous in quality. It was nice to see him add a sense of charm and exuberance to that sophisticated mix Derek Lam makes serious, luxe clothing that's quiet in statement and meticulous in quality. It was nice to see him add a sense of charm and exuberance to that sophisticated mix via tiny dotted stars and florals for Spring/Summer 2010. >> See runway images from the Derek Lam collection The shape was reminiscent of the 40's that designers like Ossie Clark & Halston were channeling in the 70's and as usual, there wasn't a single exit that was not only wearable, but also downright chic in the broad sense

NY Fashion Week: Rebecca Taylor Spring / Summer 2010

Rebecca Taylor's spring 2010 collection was one of her best to date. Runway Review Excerpt: For Spring 2010 Rebecca Taylor did not deny her fans her signature flippy silk skirts, romantic mini-florals, and bright liberty printed slip tops, bags and sandals. I left feeling I'd had a balanced meal and imagined how easily it would be to fit those pieces into my own color phobic wardrobe. #NYFW My thing is that I can't wear her stuff because I am afraid of pink and flowers. I've always been more punk than boho. I have an androgynous sort of body and feel most at home in black, navy, charcoal gray and maybe some nude every once in a while. And so it

NY Fashion Week: BCBG Spring / Summer 2010

BCBG | Spring / Summer Runway Summer 2010 Runway Review Excerpt: Sometimes you don't always need a new proposition and there's nothing wrong with knowing what works and sticking to it and Max & Lubov Azria used this to their full advantage. BCBG has come a long, long way since it's humble inception in the early 90's and I fondly remember back in the day, about 7th grade to be exact, that when it first hit the states it was the label to get your hands on, especially since it was so elusive at the time. While that may not be the case anymore, you have to think that if BCBG has done anything, it has completely eclipsed major department

The Joy of Fashion: Good Fun, and Art in the Mix

Fashion’s Night Out- Downtown fashion and art scene… Last night was Vogue’s “Fashion’s Night Out,” a city-wide shopping event with hundreds of shops staying open til 11pm, providing music & cocktails to not only get customers motivated to shop, but to also remind them of the joy of fashion itself. And with the state of today’s economy, it was a rather refreshing and well-planned initiative to get people excited. I didn’t personally see many cash registers buzzing, but what I did love was the communal air it gave the city of New York, where the streets were filled with well suited crowds of people, all out for a good time and a good cause. After spending the early morning &

How to Be a Chic Parisianista Tip #2: Wear Nice Underwear

“I don’t always wear underwear. When I’m in the heat, especially, I can’t wear it. Like, if I’m wearing a flower dress, why do I have to wear underwear?” --Naomi Campbell, supermodel. The How To Be A Chic Parisianista Series | 7 Steps to French Chic Maybe not wearing underwear with flower dresses in the heat is an English thing, but the French seem to have the opposite approach: wear it come rain or shine, hot or cold – no questions asked. Definitely wear it appreciatively, discreetly (not on the outside displayed for everyone!), beautifully, and above all - confidently. After all, you never know when you’re going to flash a French dad at the school fair like La Mom

Los Angeles Style on a Budget: Naven in Color

Bright Lights and Minis, Oh My! One of the hottest trends this season has been far and away the bold use of color and the latest collection by LA-based twin designers Kym and Alexis McClay have definitely hit that nail on the head. Their line Naven, whose name comes from a city in Ireland where their family is from, is a collection of gorgeous and absolutely covetable pieces. Their bold use of neon yellow, hot pink, lime, purple, and royal blue is definitely what grabs your attention first but upon further inspection I was pleased to find that the construction and detail was absolutely impeccable. The fabrics included silks, deconstructed dresses, and a touch of iridescent shantung. One sweetheart boustier

Hometown Style: The 90’s Are Back in Los Angeles, fashion that is!

Volcom Does Not Disappoint … There's a breath of fresh air to the LA scene thanks to the true fashion feast in store at the launch of Volcom's new denim collection, The event was held at the LA Volcom store and hosted by NYLON Magazine. The looks were a combination of 90’s grunge and 50’s greaser with tomboy pieces mixed in. My favorite pieces had to be the shoulder studded jean vest, the cream studded motorcycle jacket, and of course the tie-dye skinnys. Stud details were everywhere from jackets, to jeans, to shoes and really added that tough ‘Tank Girl’ vibe. Colored denim also made a huge appearance with cropped vintage wash vests and lightweight striped skinny jeans. The denim
