Notes from Paris…

It’s quite the scene here in the city of light this week as it’s Paris Fashion Week for the Fall 2012 season. Fashion designers are madly racing to put the finishing touches on their collections, while fashion show attendees, groupies, fashion bloggers, buyers, and magazine editors are all scurrying breathlessly from one show to the next.

Aganovich Fall 2012

I met Brooke Taylor and Nana Aganovich, the founders of the label Aganovich, a few years ago and covered their first show in 2010. I have been following them ever since I took a liking to their thoughtful approach to their collections. This season their show was presented in a cavernous former car repair garage on rue du Turenne in the Marais.

 Aganovich Fall 2012

Aganovich Fall 2012

The collection was inspired by illustrator Clifford Harper’s arctic imagery of icebergs and avalanches in a moody color palette of black, white, and blue. The look was linear, covered up and the models looked like they were bracing for a cold winter in Scandinavia, with their zippered high necks and wool helmet hats.

There was a nice subtlety in the tonal white fabrications of wool and felt, along with black wool and charmeuse.

Many of the styles had a modern-day romantic druid like quality to them with long, voluminous, robe dresses that evoked chic gospel robes.  The vanilla cable knit zippered poncho with low armholes made for a delicious cocoon any woman would love to snuggle up in the depths of a chilly day.

Aganovich has always had a distinct viewpoint and they moved forward this season with a collection of smart, non-trendy, non-conformist clothes. –Richard Nahem
