WINTER WHITES-

Nicole Farhi Fall 2013

Winter white seen at: Giles, Erdem, Pringle, Osman, Roksanda Ilincic

That old winter white rule is long gone. In fact, with all of the color in the street style there was plenty of white on the runway on the London shows for fall 2013, white was one of the most noticeable, wear it now trends of the season. Along with somber flesh tones, peachy hues and soothing grays, white led the way for a crisp set of winter options that will energize a gray day just as the neon trends of yore did. Nicole Farhi’s new design director made a case for a total white out, just imagine the look above outside on the darkest of days adding an air of easy elegance.

White and low-key hues, go for it! With basic black and suppressive layers, bright white sounds like a refreshing change of pace, and a great way to highlight beautifully crafted pieces.

Style Tip: That’s where you need to take note, when going light and tonal even, look for items that suggest luxe fabrications and construction for a substantial statement. Sturdy, not gauzy.

MOTO DETAILS-

Preen Fall 2013

Moto seen at: Richard Nicoll, Todd Lynn, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Richard Nicoll

This season in New York & London, designers paid a nod to the Met’s upcoming retrospective of punk elements in fashion via witty takes on moto jackets. Spliced, diced and thoroughly rethought, the best iterations veered on the simple, such as Preen’s uber cool vest. We know a few girls who’d wear that religiously, which is not too hard to imagine.

By now, a well cut motorcycle jacket should be a closet staple for you, and with that box checked, think of expanding with a modern take. In stores now, we’ve seen moto elements on everything from the decorative collar on a trapeze dress to the fastenings of a trench.

Style tip: Just keep it on the classic side when it comes to color & cut when you add moto edge.

DARK & ROMANTIC-

Antonio Berardi Fall 2013

Dark & romantic seen at: Erdem, Michael van der Ham, Giles, Christopher Kane, Antonio Berardi (above), Mulberry (top)

Leave it to London to hit the season’s call for black with an experimental, ladylike verve woven with a spin of subversive, feminine pieces that were modern with a wicked, retro tinge. Using black as a canvas for mixed prints, textures and patterns, the dark hue has yet to become tedious. Romantic at Erdem with layers of colors to sheer lace at Simone Rocha, collections sparked with black in diverse ways for everyone.

Exuberant and ladylike, grown up and often fortified with intense decoration and attention to detail, seductive black made a clear proposition. To follow the beat, look for new elements and twists. A classic silhouette will do, but hone in on pieces that have a striking, modern individuality. Pieces with say, paneled construction, plays on sheer, or kicked out with unmistakable compositions such as the addition of patent leather and even vinyl.

Style Tip: Layer different textures and weights of black to avoid a heavy Goth feel.

THE RETURN OF THE JUMPSUIT-

Richard Nicoll Fall 2013

The return of the jumpsuit seen at: Richard Nicoll, Emilio de la Morena, Ashish

Richard Nicoll’s sublime denim look cashmere knit jumpsuit is one of the many easy to wear yet gorgeously realized pieces to walk the LFW runways. In fact, a smart jumpsuit made to look like separates had a moment at so many shows, they most certainly looked viable.

A polished, neutral option will do and if the fit is anything like Nicoll’s, throw a blazer over it for the office -the ways you can take a new foundational jumpsuit are endless. And easy! Layer away…

Style Tip:  The trick to finding the right jumpsuit is one that flatters and fits comfortably on your short, average or long torso. Have a seat in the dressing room and make sure it’s a comfy fit

THE FLAT STATEMENT SHOE-

Simone Rocha Fall 2013

The flat statement shoe seen at: Erdem, Burberry, Simone Rocha, Clements Ribeiro

Just like we first noted  the animal print kitten heel wedge at Burberry F/W 2013, statement making flats and lace-ups were a major moment to take note of as they guarantee a comfortable wear, with your best foot forward. Simone Rocha’s clever lucite heeled brogue, is forward thinking with its nod to menswear and its flash of light, which begs for a second look.

Break out of the mold and look for flat and low heeled shoes that stand out from the basic, they’ll make for a unique piece that you’ll enjoy wearing.

Style Tip: A slight wedge or a bit of a lift is more flattering than pancake flats on heavier or muscular legs and so right on trend as well!
