Learn a thing or two on how to work ahead and add top runway trends pre-fall 2013 into your wardrobe now. Stay ahead of the pack:

Cocoon Coats & Jackets-

Rochas Pre-Fall 2013

Seen at: Chloe, Celine, Fendi, Rochas, No. 21, Stella McCartney

Big on volume, high on elegance, a cocoon couture shaped topper made an appearance from dozens of designers which comes in handy when considering the amount of layering one has to conceal this time of year.

Our Take: Of all the oversized coats and jackets out there, the most prominent feature was a curved shoulder that evoked the couture silhouette’s of Balenciaga and gave many a look a 60′s tinge. Stick to outerwear that’s fuss free with a stand out shape as this is one trend that’s not going to be going anywhere soon.

Belt Everything-

Celine Pre-Fall 2013

Belts, who said they were ever out of style? Nope, they never were but the predominance of them from many labels reminded us that they can often make an outfit entirely on their own.

Seen at: Balmain, Chloe, Celine

From belted coats at Gucci to decadent disco waistbands at Balmain, belts made a major return when looking for those extras whether body defining or purely ornamental.

Our Take: You’ve got belts, we’ve got belts, nothing new here right?  Take a second look, the trick here is to look for belts that are distinctive, full of attitude yet somehow remarkably subtle.

Contrast Lace-

Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2013

Lace too girly for you? Reconsidered for pre-fall in pure white backed with sinister noir, lace brings out both the light & the dark…

Seen at: Christopher Kane, McQueen, Valentino, Preen

No longer saccharine sweet, lace confections infused with stark contrasts look modern and in line with the seasons serious, minimal direction.

Our Take: Go to lace balanced with hard & soft calls for of the moment silhouettes to keep it thoroughly up to date so be on the lookout for new takes. Think abstract and challenge yourself to try unconventional notions, like the abbreviated trapeze neckline of the McQueen number above.

Capes-

Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2013

Seen at: Valentino, McQueen, Stella McCartney

A season with substantial outerwear options brought with it a slew of covetable capes with a regal appeal via embroideries, intricate detailing and cocoon couture shapes.

Our Take: A cape rendered in fine fabrications gives an immediate air of sophistication while boasting a practical throw-it-on appeal. Stick to capes in classic materials and finishes to stand apart.

The Elegant Black Suit-

Dior Pre-Fall 2013

Seen at: Christian Dior, Celine, Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier

Back on the runways after seasons of eclectic mixes and head-to-toe prints, the return of black in a big way made for the ultimate palette cleanser this spring and continues into fall. It’s no wonder we’ve noticed smart black suits pop up at many a pre-fall outing in a generous array of options. Standouts came from Dior and Saint Laurent, both finessed with requisite Parisian neck scarves.

Our Take: With a black suit, keep it lean, simple and refined or opt for an iconic shape as you’re certain to get the most mileage and ease per wear. When we say iconic, think statement making as in retro appeal i.e peplums, sharp shoulders and tuxedo. Who said a black suit needs to be basic?

Brogues-

Givenchy Pre-Fall 2013

And, THE MOST COMFORTABLE TO GO WITH… borrowing from the boys with a sensible shoe…

Seen at: Acne, Celine, Derek Lam, Givenchy, Stella McCartney

The classic brogue, a pinnacle element of men’s style, worked to punctuate the season’s office friendly approach to paired back dressing. From Celine’s contemporary contrast options with metallic flaps to Givenchy’s conservative takes, a slightly mannish shoe can make a great alternative when worn with care.

Our Take:  Depending on how tall you are and what proportions your outfit features, a simple flat lace-up in forever classic shiny calf  also delivers the unexpected. With a dress or a skirt, pair them with socks and tights of all ilk no matter what your height, but with pants, consider a break in the leg if you are on the petite side with a cuffed hem. And just like for men, stick to round toes as you’ll get wear season after season.
