Runway Review: The ♀ Another vision of Maison Martin Margiela is billed as a take on femininity, but from this house one will never expect feminine to be defined as girlish naivety but rather clean, yet ironic pieces for a woman with a more big city style sensibility who craves some edge in her everyday pieces.

Truth be told, I wear A LOT from the Martin Margiela brand. Either the more conservatively priced and casual MM6 Maison Martin Margiela line, or the signature Masion Martin Margiela collection (the boots are my personal obsession). There is a certain never trendy, always edgy, but extremely wearable and timeless aesthetic that makes these clothes, accessories, and shoes my go-to items on a very regular basis.
The MM6 Maison Martin Margiela spring collection presented in celebration of the NY brick and mortar store opening is true to its core.
At first glance, there is an austereness to the collection but it is essentially a complex– yet subtle– take on simplicity that makes each piece a modern and very wearable wardrobe basic. There’s plenty of signature ease and a bit of tongue in cheek, yet avante garde whimsy, particularly by way of the clear mid heel booties, or brilliant accent hued neutral shoes.
The collection was presented with pieces hanging on garment racks, showroom style, enabling you to touch, feel, and imagine them in a wardrobe before the runway walk– the styling potential is exponential.
This is by far not a fashion follower collection but a homage to the devotion of stylized simplicity; a trait that has gotten lost on the trend grabbing fashionistas seen posing outside Lincoln Center for NYFW– that’s a good thing for the rest of us.
