Ralph Lauren Collection Spring 2013 Runway Review: Dont call it a costume affair as this landmark designer of easy-on-the-wear style has yet to disappoint

 Opening with a selection of full-on looks with an ambiguous Spanish vibe (was it Spain, or Latin America on the mind?) the designer delivered a series of serious looks with an assortment of style notes to consider.

Shawls, ponchos, Matador jackets, here, they all got the full-on Ralph Lauren treatment. Head-to-toe, each exit made for a convincing argument on the enduring sartorial cues and effortless romance of Spanish style influences on fashion at large.

Always a pragmatist, Lauren topped said looks with berets and toppers of all kinds that were at once unexpected and truly modern. They worked to stamp the collection with a real-world wearability.

So did studded bags, filigree totes and a gaggle of pitch-perfect goddess gowns that are certain to make a splash on red carpets around the world.

 This was one collection that was chalk full of so many beautifully considered items that there’s destined to be something for literally everyone.

Aside from those winning berets, our favorite looks were the ones that verged more on Lauren territory than the lofty ideals of Spanish heritage elements that captured the designers imagination.

Case in point is the combination of a crisp white blouse paired with a jet sequined maxi skirt (below). While not a new idea in general, it toyed with Lauren’s signature plays on masculine/feminine while dishing up an option that was ageless and fiercely glamorous. Pulled apart, that look single-handedly championed the designers knack at creating beautiful, functional and completely versatile fashion for the ages.
