Edition by Georges Chakra NY Fashion Week, Fall – Winter 2010
There is a pristine elegance in the collection’s delicate beauty that is feminine but highly sophisticated at the same time.
Runway Review Excerpt: The Edition by Georges Chakra collection brings to mind a very modern update on Jacques Fath who was known for his curvaceous and architectural cuts in cocktail dresses and ballgowns in the late 1940′s to early 1950′s.
Once at the Paris flea market, I was lucky enough to come upon a steel colored brocade cocktail dress with a double row of velvet ribbons, black net inner slip, intricate inner and outer seaming, and sculpted to resemble an upside down champagne flute. The exquisite dress by the French designer Jacques Fath who was known for his curvaceous and architectural cuts in dinner dresses and ballgowns in the late 1940′s to early 1950′s. Like most of Mr. Fath’s designs from that period, my dress had a very elegant décolletage so that you would look alluring from across the dinner table, with a pretty back for when you got up to excuse yourself.

The Fath dress was timeless in its design and meticulous in its attention to detail. Unfortunately, its previous owner must have shared my infatuation and overindulged in its wear as well as with a few extra bonbons as its bodice seams were beyond repair. Over thirty years after its prime, I was able to manage one good wear out of the dress at a club in the very dark of night. But that dress has always been a favorite. I considered myself lucky to have found it because if not for its seams, it probably would have been in a museum collection.
The Edition by Georges Chakra fall /winter 2010 collection brings to mind a very modern Jacques Fath sensibility– like Fath, Georges Chakra is also both a couturier and ready to wear designer.
There is a pristine elegance in the collection’s delicate beauty that is feminine but highly sophisticated at the same time. Inspired by Argentinean painter and sculptor Lucio Fontana, who is known for his lacerated canvases, Chakra applied a similar look to the dresses, with sharp, asymmetrically cut necklines and thin panels of netting in both the front and back.

You will surely want them to see you both coming and going as almost every style has a revealing back that compliments the cut of the neckline. Along with the abundance of back interest, the attention to attention to craftsmanship is shown in asymmetrical cuts, illusion panels, intricate shoulder straps, all in sculpted silhouettes with textural and graphic elements– simply pretty in the most flattering sense of the word.
