Julian Louie Fall 2010 New York Fashion Week at Milk Studios
Runway Review: This outing highlighted Louie’s knack for creating clothes that are distinctive yet grounded in reality
Amidst a fun & energetic Friday at Milk Studios with stellar presentations everywhere you turned, Julian Louie’s short film screening of Ukrainian model Jules Mordovets was set in a serene if not hyper-bourgeois setting, complete with a mannequin resting on a gilt settee in full-on Charles James inspired regalia.
Were we in for heavy and baroque from a designer that’s been working laid-back sophistication with an uncompromising ease and cool hand? Thankfully, this wasn’t the case as this outing highlighted Louie’s knack for creating clothes that are distinctive yet grounded in reality.
Sumptuous pleated velvet pants worn with a graphic pieced silk blouse and a paneled pearl embroidered top paired with a velvet ra-ra skirt proved just how strong of a designer this young talent is when it comes to creating clothes that you simply can’t find anywhere else.
With the reality worn pragmatism that can sometimes make New York fashion week seem so banal, Julian Louie’s fall outing made a strong statement that moved in all the right directions. – Naveed Hussain, VagabondNYC
