Mark Fast has models of all sizes on his London Fashion Week fall 2010 runway
Runway Review: Fast’s decision to cast ‘normal-sized’ models in his shows is surrounded by controversy, but it is a comforting reminder that we don’t have to be super thin to enjoy the creations by this talented London-based designer
Moments before Mark Fast’s Fall 2010 London fashion Week show commenced there was only one question on everyone’s lips – were we about to see ‘normal’ sized models strut down the runway in the style of last season?
We quickly became aware that the answer to this was yes, as we witnessed none other than famed plus-size model Crystal Renn modeling one of Fast’s tightly knitted, body-con creations. British plus-size model, Hayley Morley who starred in the designer’s controversial Spring 2010 had also been cast for this show.
Aside from the big fashion statement channeled through Fast’s casting decisions, what else did the collection have to offer?

Well, the designer’s signature body-con aesthetic was championed throughout, but this time around the tiny knitted creations were juxtaposed with a range of loose, flowing over-garments.
In a delicious palette of lilac, navy, red, mustard, fuchsia and orange the collection included draped, floaty skirts, tops and outerwear as well as intricately knitted, tight mini dresses.
Block colour was the order of the day as looks were styled in one shade head-to-toe. A look made up of a mustard knitted mini dress, mustard tights and mustard shoes may not be for the faint-hearted but it sure looks striking on the runway.

Exhibiting a range of knitting techniques which experiment with tensions and restricting the body, this collection is strong and is sure to be a hit with all Mark Fast fans out there. Fast’s decision to cast ‘normal-sized’ models in his shows is surrounded by controversy, but it is a comforting reminder that we don’t have to be super thin to enjoy the creations by this talented London-based designer. – Kirsty in London
