Mary Katrantzou Fall Fashion Show at London Fashion Week

Runway Review:Every garment, from the colour, to the design, to the strategic placement of the printed fabric, all work together to achieve the ideal hourglass silhouette.

Digital prints and Mary Katrantzou go hand-in-hand, but her eye for striking graphics is not her only talent as demonstrated in her Fall 2010 show…

Katrantzou’s latest collection highlights her strengths as a designer who, not only has a great visual eye, but who also possesses a very impressive tailoring ability. Beautifully crafted dresses that hug the body in all the right places are incredibly flattering and structured paneling tricks the eye, taking inches off the body.

In seasons past Katrantzou has focused her concentration on using sharp, graphic prints. But this season sees a move away from this to the use of softer, regal designs, inspired by 18th century paintings with printed details such as pearls and lace.

This time around the designer experimented with volume by adding layers of lace frills for a frou frou effect. Use of a wide range of textures including luxurious silk, sheer jersey and heavy wool injected variety into the collection.

Statement jewellery was not only worn, but in many instances became a vital part of the look, often concealing parts of the models’ bodies.

Season after season her designs never fail to impress and, with a diffusion line for Topshop under her belt, and yet another collection of visually stunning, colourful, flattering garments in her latest show, the future certainly looks bright for Mary Katrantzou. — Kirsty in London
