And since you can always use real-deal vintage pieces to pull together a completely customized look, we couldn’t think of a more practical guide to get you started. From the 40’s to the 70’s, designers were looking at the past in ways we hadn’t ever seen; here’s our top picks.

Miu Miu (and above)

Bringing you 40’s starlet glamour as seen through the eyes of 70’s era Yves Saint Laurent, Miuccia Prada’s dazzling Fall outing was full of references that harkened back to the era’s confident femininity with broad shoulder lines, sprays of Lily of the Valley florals and over-sized clutches that were as easy on the wear as they were on the eye.

 Bottega Veneta

Channeling fashion’s beloved 60’s Mods with their color-blocked separates, rounded shapes and above-the-knee lengths, Bottega Veneta brought an uncanny, modern update to the era via technicolor hues and out-of-this world advanced fabrications that were full of texture and dimension.

Gucci

The 70’s has always worked as a trove of inspiration for Gucci’s ultra-deluxe mantra but the real story for Fall was all in the collection’s styling.

Here, plush furs, wide brimmed hats and decadent layering a plenty added the right touch of savoir faire to an otherwise classical collection full of heritage minded gear for the glamazon on the go.

What to look for-

  • In the Mix: Think about starting with something basic such as a shift dress while using accessories(all from the same era) for a look that’s more individual
  • Keep it Simple: Stick to one era and try to be on the look out for details that make the item timeless -too much retro is a no-go
  • Flaunt: Use vintage-inspired pieces to add a touch of attitude to your look while keeping in mind that less is better
  • Dress it Up: Since glamourous notions of the past have yet to be surpassed by today’s simple-chic ideals, look for luxe pieces that will add a bit of luxury to your uniform -Naveed Hussain
