Pretty Summer
Hairstyles: Simple hair packs big volume…
Natural Beauty is key for hot weather hairstyles |
Dear
Sharon: Summer hairstyles are
always bewildering. I don’t like fancy hairstyles that are difficult
to maintain in the heat, anyway. Plus, I don’t feel that overly
done-up hair looks that great in the warm weather and I think that I
can look a little “suburban” and matronly when my hair looks like I
spent too much time on it.
I have several big nights out and a batch of business presentations
where I want my hair to be pretty yet simple and
easy to style
myself at-home. What hot hairstyles do you suggest to help my dull
hairdo look polished and stylishly up-to-date this summer? --
Pretty Hair Princess (Grand Rapids, MI)
Dear
Pretty Hair Princess: How
right you are!!! Overly complicated hairstyles are never a good
thing for everyday regardless of the season. There is always
something unsettling about seeing a woman with a souped-up, high
maintenance hairdo for no special reason unless she has the style
chutzpah like Amy Winehouse to pull it off, and few do!

I don’t know if I would necessarily call it suburban, rather than
being stuck in a hairstyle time warp, but a too-too overdone do is a
common style zapper which many women fall prey. If the fancy hair
matrons only realized how aging any adaptation of dated helmet hair
really is, they wouldn’t be so fast to call their plastic surgeon
until they saw a better hairstylist! Conversely, there is a huge
difference between low-maintenance hairstyles and unkempt, stringy,
dry, or burnt-out yucko hippie hair— pass the puka beads and deal
with grown-up hair!
Effortlessly pretty hair with movement in a modern cut that flatters
your face and hair texture is always key to keeping your look fresh
and approachable. Besides, natural yet polished hairstyles are the
perfect accompaniment to this season’s pretty, tissue-weight, floaty
dresses and tops. The right cut can easily take you from a
professional meeting to a big night out with minimum effort.

The ‘it” hairstyles of the season
have a timeless elegance that
translate well for any age group— their lissome and unaffected
allure appears innocent of overfussing and over styling and relies
on the genius of a great cut. The modern bob is far from your
typical soccer mom
bob, it’s a bit shorter and angled with a little more length to
the front that frames the face. Cute as a button pixie hair
is perfect for women with small features who love a feminine short
cut that has plenty of subtle movement. A gentle ‘fro has a
soft, touch me quality that is fresh, modern, and youthful. The
long and sleek hairstyles of the season have gentle curves and
fall in a natural way rather than the tarty wannabe for a LA-based
reality show, freaky long extensions we have all seen far too much
of.
When it comes to great hair, look no further than Frederic Fekkai whose style team I entrust with my modern bob— a
hairstyle that I was a bit apprehensive to revisit as it was my
signature Vidal Sassoon “special” for years, but when styled
with a modern edge, this bob looks totally fresh, chic, and on the
mark!
The
Diane Von Furstenburg spring summer collection was based on
the “All About Eve” theme with a homage to nature, earth and of
course Eve. For this DVF fashion show, Frederic Fekkai designed the
hair to be “very natural, flowing, young and beautiful. Think earthy
and pure.”
This ultra-stylish and unfussed look can be achieved in
a few
styling steps. Fekkai says, “I asked the models to try to come with
clean hair so there was natural shine and little texture. I then
sprayed my new Fekkai Glossing Sheer Shine Mist lightly throughout
the hair to add more shine, brilliance and manageability. On a low,
medium-heat setting, I blew the hair slightly straight so there was
just a slight wave, making hair looked very undone and natural. I
then brushed the hair with my Classic Brush. Finally, I blew a shot
of cold air from the dryer and finished with another spritz of
Glossing Sheer Shine Mist to tame flyaways. And voila!” Beautiful
hair that’s simple and easy to style with marvelously pretty
results! Who could ask for more, other than a cut with the master
himself?
