Dear
Sharon: I want a
new hairstyle for
summer. I’m obsessed about all the boho clothes and bold colors
in fashion
now and think my
long hair looks pretty blah by comparison. Can you tell me
about some new hot summer hairstyles with some how-to tips that I can style
at home? – A Breathe of Fresh Hair (Northridge, CA)
Dear Fresh Hair: Forget about flat irons and ironed straight hair that just
hangs there. The top hair styles right now are all about texture and curls.
There’s more of an easy-going, natural
bounce and vitality to them that’s a
perfect complement to the fullness and ornamentation in fashion this summer.
The new wave of
hair trends are do’s that are easy to manage in summer humidity
and long on fresh style. “If you do one thing this season, ensure it’s
voluminous, tousled curls,” says hair stylist
Adam Reed of the Charles
Worthington Salon hair team. With a distinct wink to rediscover your inner
flower child, braids has to be the hottest hair trend spotted from the runway to
the real way of NY and LA’s hippest ‘hoods. Reed’s beachy, slightly tousled
braided hairstyles that accompanied the feminine, boho-inspired Matthew
Williamson Spring - Summer 05 fashion collection, is the perfect stylemaker for
any summer occasion from casual day to fun
night out.
To keep you right in the fashion hair groove, we’ve asked the top hair gurus
from the Charles Worthington Results’ and bumble & Bumble’s hair teams to share
some backstage secrets on how you can pull together the trendy hair looks of the
moment at home.
Backstage at the Matthew Williamson show,
Charles Worthington Results’
Adam Reed paid homage to the carefree feeling of the season with his take on
braids, texture and curls
utilizing the entire Results
Curl-Perfection line. Reed shows that with these easy steps and the right tools,
anyone can recreate the runway look at home.

Updo
Braids
Seen at: Chado Ralph Rucci
and Baby Phat
The look: For Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons,
Laurent Philippon braided thick ropes horizontally across the head ending with a
feminine chignon at the ear. The look was R&B hip-hop meets 1920’s art deco. Philippon worked his craft with an architectural eye for Chado Ralph Rucci,
creating a “small head” silhouette with delicate braids accenting a modern updo. more

Volume and Wave
Seen at: Rebecca Taylor
The look: Dennis Lanni worked with designer Rebecca Taylor to create an
ethereal, fairy tale look. The hair was set with rubber bands folded over
repeatedly with Bb. Holding Spray. Then each section was flat-ironed for an
unexpected kink when the bands were taken out, achieving texture in an
unconventional way.

Classic Hollywood
Seen at: Bill Blass and J.Mendel
The look: Accenting the ladies-who-lunch collection at Bill Blass, Jimmy Paul
swept the hair up into a clean ponytail accented with a grosgrain ribbon. At J.Mendel, Laurent Philippon pulled the hair half up, with a low chignon at the
neck. The hairline was then back-combed for softness.

Girl Next Door
Seen at: Tuleh and Yigal Azrouel
The look: Jimmy Paul created a NYC Upper East Side girl-on-the-go look at Tuleh,
pulling the hair into a loose ponytail and doubling the hair under for a soft,
loopy bun. Dennis Lanni created a fresh-faced, loose ponytail with volume at the
crown for Yigal Azrouel.

80’s Pop
Seen at: Stephen Burrows and Heatherette.
The look: Taking inspiration from a photo shoot with Iman in 1977, Editorial
Stylist Jimmy Paul used a small barrel curling iron to create tight curls at the
crown of the head, brushing them out for volume while the rest of the head was
swept up in a tight, high updo. Walking the halls of “Heatherette High” with
designers Richie Rich and Traver Rains, Editorial Stylist Laurent Philippon
created slicked back small buns and placed them in unconventional places, and
used hair pieces in two colors for girls getting ready for the prom.
