Golden Globes Fashion: When times get tough, the tough go classic chic and have a cocktail (dress)
Take a moment away from our lives to fantasize…
It may sound crazy and positively out of whack for a fashion person to not be in love with red carpet glamour gowns but I prefer more wearable clothes that a regular person has use for in her wardrobe.

Glamorous gowns are the fantasy. Unless you are heavily involved in black-tie charity benefits, have a lots of friends or relatives getting married, or find yourself a mom on the Bar Mitzvah circuit, gowns are not really the most relevant article in your wardrobe. Let alone having the closet with a rack high enough to hang up those gownsŚit becomes quite the ordeal.
As a stylist, I could get lost in the glamorous fantasy of to-die-for gowns and drop-dead jewels, my portfolio certainly had plenty of magazine covers to show that– it was fashion escapism rather than a fashionable reality. I much prefer the latter.
However, every once in a while, we need to don an evening gown. Or take a moment away from our lives to fantasize about the stars, and the effort, and the fuss and the circumstance that all that razzle-dazzle creates.
The great thing about this year’s Golden Globes is that it wasn’t the usual tittyfest, with the exception of Mariah Carey, with stars exposing their girls and anything else that they can. It was a much more an elegant and chic affair with dresses that showed a woman’s shape, not exploit it.
We are also just dang thrilled to see Cher looking fabu at an awards show, it there was anyone who started the red carpet fashion phenomenon it was Cher! No matter what, she will always be my honorable mention.

What does make celebrity red carpet gowns so exquisite is the quality, the construction, and the fit.Śmost dresses start in the few thousands and can go up to six figures, whether borrowed or bought they are spectacular. That’s a lot of change for dress that a star can only wear once, but think about it, you can only wear a gown once in the same circles of friends too.
What I do love about that Golden Globes as compared to the Oscars red carpet is that it is a notch down on the scale of souped-up extravaganza. There are even celebrities in short dresses! Some could argue that that a celebrity is underdressed in a cocktail-length dress, but in this economy and in lieu of recent world events, it makes sense. I love that concept of both obtainable and inspirational fashion and so should you.
Ginnifer Godwin wore a purplish blue one-shoulder, Vionnet knee-length goddess dress that we can’t stop thinking about. The draping was aaaahmaaaazing It was a standout color and the perfect youthful, yet sophisticated choice for someone her age. Her simple diamond drop earrings, cuff, and clutch were the perfect touch sparkle. She is our new poster girl for modern, timeless elegance.
Julia Roberts looked incredible in her vintage Yves Saint Laurent knee-length jersey little black dress with a heavy gold necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels- it suited her personality and her figure. We hear that Roberts purchased the vintage piece directly at the Frock store in New York’s NoLita (frocknyc.com). I think she stood out above the crowd because of her paired down simplicity.
For pure glam movie star fantasy- giving the folks what they wanna see, Diane Kruger and Marion Cotillard were the most gorgeous.
Kuger in a breathtaking Schiapparelli pink Christian Lacroix Haute Couture gown that was beyond fashion. It was constructed so perfectly, so flawlessly that it was a museum-worthy fashion sculpture that worked to perfection on her frame.
Cotillard‘s dark jade silk charmeuse, one-shoulder Christian Dior gown was pure fashion magic. The elegant gown draping gave way to an aboveŚthe-knee black satin and less underdress. Surely it will be knocked off in an instant and sadly the end result will surely not have the same elegance as the original.
There were plenty of on-trend butterfly light, blush colored gowns which have a tendency to wash out on mostŚexcept for Emily Blunt who looks like perfection in her Dolce & Gabbana peachy-blush ethereal, figure-hugging gown with rough edged tuille layers for a flightful and modern feel.
What you should find inspirational for a gown in your wardrobe are the many versions of classic but never boring black- timeless dresses that you will want to rewear over the years. Penelope Cruz in Giorgio Armani PrivÚ and Vera Farmiga in Dolce & Gabbana were both splendid in embellished black embellished, figure-hugging tulip dresses.
Meryl Streep in a portrait neckline and Courtney Cox in an understated strapless gown by Victoria Beckham followed the less is more both in simple matte black fabrics.
We did a little hunting to find you a few dresses in the spirit of the 2010 Golden Globes, take a look to get the look for less:
