Michelle North said it can take up to two hours to get ready for a night on the town.
“Tonight I just didn’t know if the hat worked or if I could pull this whole look together,” said North, 22, as she waited in line to get into a club in downtown Reno recently.
The Sacramento woman, who resembles pop star Britney Spears, said getting dressed for a night on the town is stressful.
“I just think I look bad,” said the pretty blonde, who wore strappy shoes, a tank top and trendy newsboy hat. “I changed a whole bunch of times. Dressing for a club is just so hard.”
In northern Nevada, dressing for a night of clubbing can mean anything from everyday jeans to a provocative g-string peaking out from a short leather miniskirt.
From the dressed-up atmosphere of BuBinga Lounge, a bar in the Eldorado Hotel Casino, to the tropical tank top feel of Rum Bullions Island Bar at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino, almost anything goes.
“It really depends what mood I am in,” said Jennifer Zabelsky, 22. “Sometimes I just put on a cute top, but tonight I wanted to wear something a little more fun.”
Zabelsky, a recent music graduate from the University of Nevada, Reno was wearing a retro style dress with blue and black flowers and open-toed shoes. She carried a little beige purse.
“When I saw this dress, I said ‘I just have to have it,’” she said of the ’50s-style halter look that she bought at the Limited.
Zabelsky’s outfit is exactly what’s in style.
“Fashion is really retro right now,” said Joey Brown, director of sales and spokesperson for OPI, a nail care company. Brown is also a fashion expert, having worked in the industry for more than 20 years.
“Things are colorful and really flimsy right now,” Brown said. “Women are having fun with their clothes.”
She said women can’t go wrong wearing a slip dress and strappy shoes to a club.
“That look will work anywhere.”
’80s comeback
The midriff-baring look and hip huggers may soon be on its way out despite its overwhelming popularity everywhere from West Second Street to the Garage at the Reno Hilton.
“The ’80s club look is coming back in New York,” said Sharon Haver of FocusOnStyle.com, an online fashion magazine.
Haver, the Web site’s founder, has more than 15 years experience in the glamour business.
“The other day I saw Britney Spears sitting at a Starbucks wearing a big long pink glove,” Haver said. “It looked like leg warmer on her arm.”
Haver said to expect the rocker and biker look to be hot for party-goers.
“For the longest time, the look has been hip huggers and belly shirts. It’s been such a long time that we are bound to see other things soon.”
At most places in northern Nevada, the style is much more laid back and less competitive.
“In Reno, we are seeing people go for the sporting look,” said Ray Salano, general manager at Metropolis, a nightclub in downtown Reno. “People here are going with a more casual, hip hop look.”
He admitted Reno is dressed down compared to other cities.
“Women can wear whatever they want. That’s just the fact of the matter, but to get in (here), men have to at least be wearing a polo shirt, jeans and nice sneakers.”
Haver of FocusOnStyle.com said getting into the hottest clubs in New York or Los Angeles is a completely different ball game.
“It’s about the shoes. Bouncers look at shoes. Whatever you do, wear good shoes,” Haver said.
For women, that means any pointy toed high heeled look, like a Jimmy Choo or “Sex in the City” type shoe. For men, that means Converse sneakers or motorcycle boots. Also anything with bright colors is trendy right now.
“And never, I mean never, wear the same sneakers you wear to the gym.”
For most of the men on a Saturday night in Reno, jeans and Hawaiian print shirts are the norm.
“I don’t really think about it,” said Robert Picetti, 22. Picetti, who is from the San Francisco Bay area, said it only took a few minutes to decide on jeans and a blue Hawaiian print shirt.
“For guys, we don’t care as much.”
But according to Haver, the same trendy surfer look Picetti was wearing is fast disappearing in bigger cities.
“Expect to see men in aviator type clothes and that urban cowboy look. Also the mustache is coming back.”
But for now, hip huggers and revealing shirts are the norm despite many saying they are ready for a change.
“You end up wearing the same thing over and over again,” said Jacy Silvernale of Reno. Silvernale, 22, was wearing a red bandanna-style top and jeans outside of Brew Brothers, a bar in the Eldorado, on a Saturday night few weeks ago.
She said finding a new style or a new outfit is driven by boredom, and that she was glad styles change so much.
“I felt like everything I have I have worn. It gets boring. I guess I have to go get some new stuff.”
