Style Motivation Week! Lighten up. Have fun. It’s only fashion.

This week’s Summer Spotlight theme pulls from some of my favorite style motivation posts. I don’t want you ever to take style or fashion too seriously because you lose the spontaneity that makes it all so interesting. And unique to you. Lighten and move forward… it’s only fashion. S.H.

Ok, I was (sort of) eavesdropping.

Here I was, out and about, having an espresso and couldn’t help but listen the one-sided conversation of the girl across the coffee bar.

You know the type.

Clutching her cellphone and talking at a decibel level as if she were orating into a can with a string rather than the gold earbuds that she had plugged in.

REALLY, we can ALL hear you. Clearly. Even above the sound of a cappuccino in progress.

So, the loud talker was in a state of dress distress. She was very perturbed that she wouldn’t have the “right” shoes to wear with her cute new dress (Forever 21 shopping bag in hand) to meet “Gary” at a bar later.

What would she do? How could she wear it? Is there something she could borrow?  She had no time to go shopping. What if.

It was all so desperate. A plea to the fashionista on the other side of the phone. What would Gary think?

It’s better to take a chance than risk to be boring (and matchy-matchy). Laurence Bossion Spring Summer 2014 hats collection

I looked at her again and she was pretty done-up.

Maybe even too impeccably done-up in a matchy-matchy follow-the-trend kind of way. Let’s just say that her nail polish matched her clutch, matched her belt, matched her lipgloss. Exactly. To a T.

I am sure, rather sure, that if she would only take a chill pill, there were surely shoes lurking in her closet that she could easily wear + look stunning. If not overly coordinated, and that’s a good thing.

The point of sharing my eavesdropping escape is to take a chance…

Understand that if you really had an edited closet that was brimming with all sorts chic + gorgeous goodness you could probably find a pair of shoes that would look more than lovely with your new outfit.

I bet that even “Gary” would approve.

>>DON’T MISS: My evergreen posts where great style (and tips) are never out of season

Once you start relying on too many trends it becomes ever so more complicated to pair things up.

It becomes a case of too many moving pieces which conversely ends up looking rather cookie-cutter in what was an attempt to stay overly trendy.

It becomes just too-too.

With all the overwrought attempts to find the “perfect’ something you thereby lose the imperfect beauty that is uniquely you. That is special.

Don’t sweat it. Look at the big picture. How does it ALL come together. It’s only fashion, not life-saving surgery.

Take a chance. Risk it all. But never feel the desperation to belong. Or the obsession to be perfect. Just be you… that’s pretty fabulous all to itself.

Did you know? C’est Chic Crash Course is coming soon. I promise you won’t have to obsess about what you wear. But you will find the chic within yourself to soar, when you want to turn it on.

Did you get the word? StyleWORD. Every day there’s a new motivational tip and style quote to get you going.

Know any loud talkers or get obsessed about what to wear? Spill the beans in the comments below.
