Grace Kelly Style- “From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly – Beyond the Icon” Exhibition in Montreal

I’ll Have What She’s HavingFrench Canadian Chic Week continues with timeless Grace Kelly style via the “From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly – Beyond the Icon” exhibition in Montreal.

The Grace Kelly exhibition at Museum McCord in Montreal is more biographical than costume. As you walk through the galleries, what you see is deeper than the clothes themselves. It becomes the story of a young woman who rose from model to actress to Princess to style icon.

What is the most apparent is that the clothes on their own are all lovely, if not even dated or dowdy in some cases, BUT when compared to the photos of Grace Kelly wearing the same outfit, the clothes then come to life & transcend to another level of effortless grace and ease. Truly a case of a woman who makes the clothes.

Proving once again:  Style is not the breathe of wardrobe but the woman herself who makes the garments legend. (click to tweet)

Factoids on Grace Kelly style:
  • She stood 5’6  1/2″ tall and started out as a John Robert Powers model.
  • She was thrifty and did her own hair & makeup off screen.
  • She was first named Best Dressed Woman in the world in 1954.
  • In 1955, Grace Kelly wore a Christina Dior suit and carried a Hermes bag (pictured above) on day of her engagement announcement to Prince Ranier. That bag became known as the Kelly bag.
  • The aqua that she wore when she won the Oscar was designed by Edith Head. As was her blush pink, To Catch A Thief Dress.
  • Her name was enshrined in the lining of her Caliri shoes.
  • For her wedding to Prince Ranier, Helen Rose created the blush pink lace wedding outfit for the Civil Ceremony along with the iconic silk  lace wedding gown at the studios of MGM.
