Stylist Advice- What to wear with really flashy shoes

Jeffrey Campbell Martini Studded Ballerina Flats

Q:

I just bought these beautiful Jeffrey Campbell Martini Studded Ballerina Flats and I don’t know what to wear with them. I’ve tried to get some help from friends, but they think the shoes are “too gold” or “tacky.” I was thinking about taking them back but I don’t want to because I love them. Can you please give me some ideas or suggestions?

I can’t figure what kind of tops or dresses to wear with them. Thanks, I’ve attached a link to the shoes for you,. (E.E. via Fashion Advice)

A:

Yup, those shoes could go either way–cool or super tacky. It’s all matter of what you wear with them.

As a rule, when you wear flashy shoes, or flashy anything for that matter, its key to balance out what could get very gaudy with something clean and simple. Consider the shoe as an accessory accent.

Go by the KISS (keep it styled simple) rule and not layer any unnecessary extras to compete with your shoes. Let the heavily embellished shoes be the focal point of your entire outfit and pair them with something stark and clean to not overwhelm.

Even though the shoes are heavily studded and called “ballerina flats, they look like tuxedo shoes to me.  I would stay within the tuxedo vibe with tuxedo influences by way of soft & cropped tuxedo pants or a tux shirt.

Alternatively, go the more unexpected way with white jeans and a crisp white shirt, or very distressed boyfriend jeans. What ever you wear, be sure its not fussy.
