I recently bought a navy pencil skirt. I am uncertain of what to wear with it for shoes or boots in the fall to winter months. Do I wear nylons or tights?

There is something very classic and elegant about the color navy. Once you add the chicness of a pencil skirt, you have a wardrobe essential with timeless style, the perfect investment piece to wear and rework for seasons to come.

The top that you select dictates the type of shoe or hose you wear, as that top in combination with your skirt creates the total look. There are so many modern color choices to pair with navy. Right now, jewel tones, particularly a rich purple, emerald, or teal offsets the richness of navy. I’d try some a voluminous silk blouse to offset the sleekness of the skirt. Cinch a wide belt to offset the hourglass silhouette. Since your overall look is dark, try navy or black opaque tights with a platform bootie or sturdier soled shoe to complete the look.

Another option would be a crisp boyfriend shirt in white or a buttery golden color. I’d layer several chain necklaces or wear one statement necklace to add interest. Since your top is pale and sleek, a bare leg or sheer hose would do the trick. Pumps with an interesting heel, either architectural or in a contrasting color are both sophisticated and sexy.

Burnished gold brocade, silvery sequins, or rich velvet are unexpected and interesting fabrics to consider when you want to take your pencil skirt from day to evening. Don’t be afraid to mix black with navy either, just be sure that their textures complement each other.
