Ageless Style Week- Can a senior wear a short skirt?

This week's Summer Spotlight is Ageless Style... Just because you could doesn't always mean you should when it comes to senior style. But, then again…  Can a 70-year-old fit woman wear a skirt above her knees? I'm never sure what is right for me. (L. via Fashion Advice)   [box]>> RELATED: Did you read my essay on How To Master Your Look from the book Senior Style: 65 Things to Do When You Retire?[/box] When you ask if a senior can wear a short skirt, well, there really isn't a solid answer. It's a tricky question. I am all for feeling and looking young at heart. Appearing sophisticated, worldy, and wise isn't bad either.  And looking hot at a certain age, that's  pretty

Age-Appropriate Casual Chic for the Silver Hair Set: How To Shop To Master An Ageless Stylish Wardrobe

An ageless look from Banana Republic
Sometimes age-appropriate casual chic can be a tough call to shop for... a FocusOnStyle reader shares how to work around it...  Thanks for the article/photos on Susan Sarandon. Any advice for a retired 60 year-old female graphic artist, (60)? I like to be somewhat trendy/edgy while still being age appropriate and doing it on a budget. I've begun a capsule of sorts (turquoise, charcoal and some violet), and it helps a lot, but if you could recommend basic pieces one should have for a casual wardrobe that's stylish I would appreciate it. Our pretty reader I am petite, about a size 10/12 and gain weight at my waist/midriff. I don't know where to shop. Chico's is usually too glitzy for me, Jjill is

Besides having the opportunity to share my senior style tips for a time in your life when coveting the latest it thing is not as relevant as revitalizing your most age-appropriate personal best, my essay would be in the book along such esteemed notables as my feminist idol Gloria Steinem, former President Jimmy Carter, Jane Fonda, John E. Nelson, (What Color Is Your Parachute?), and a host of other experts and achievers on how to make the most of the rest of

Senior style for forgoing pantyhose: Adjust your fashion sense for your age

Adjust your fashion sense for your age… Senior style for forgoing pantyhose Here's a spin on that proverbial chestnut: hose worn with open shoes. I'm old, and my legs show it. My old gams look much better in hose, obviously. Hose does for my legs what Ultima II does for my face! So, I know pantyhose worn with open shoes is a no-no, but I've seen old girls like me without hose, and it ain't pretty! Is there any advice you can offer? (Rochester, NY) Sweetie, you make me chuckle. Age certainly does bring wisdom in your case. You are smart enough to know that a good part of having style is the common sense that some fashion trends do

Short on Bermuda Style…Hose No’s

Short on Bermuda Style...Hose No's I like to wear navy Bermuda shorts suits with a white blouse, ivory hose, and navy shoes. I'm not into bare legs and prefer ivory in lieu of natural color hosiery. Is this acceptable dress for someone who is 60 years old and size 8? And, is colored hose out of fashion? Should I just do what feels good and looks good to me? (Conroe, TX) If you're after the Little Lord Fauntleroy look, you've hit the right mark. Bermuda shortsuits are just not a chic style choice in most fashion circles. Always unflattering ivory or white hose is simply not stylish. If you need to wear pantyhose, you should not be wearing shorts. A
