Red Carpet Style from “Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations” Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Time goes by so fast that it’s even hard to believe that the Met Gala was here once again just yesterday evening especially after the mega-buzz last year’s Savage Beauty retrospective of Alexander McQueen drew. >>MORE: Drool-worthy Red Carpet Fashion…

Best of Oscar Red Carpet Fashion 2012 Rundown

From Penelope Cruz’s retro-Hollywood inspired Armani Prive gown to a parade of matronly gala dresses, you never know what to expect from the style scene at the Oscars and this year’s 84th annual Academy Awards served as no exception -although a cold one indeed. The problem with the stylization of Hollywood is the banal red carpet…

Lady Gaga Dumps the Crazy Costumes and Wears Tom Ford

I'll Have What She's Having: This is HIGH F-A-S-H-I-O-N, but is it right for Lady Gaga?It seems that Lady Gaga got the memo that the constant ridiculous costumes distract from her music. Its redundancy in trying to push the envelope becomes, well, boring. Then, there is fashion, and there is HIGH fashion. At an appearance for MTV News last night, Lady Gaga wore an off the runway, Tom Ford chalk white guipure lace dress with 3D detail. The dress has the exaggerated aristocratic elegance of a dress that the model Dovima would have been photographed wearing in the 1950's.And, I love it!

Kate Middleton Trumps Michelle Obama With Her Reiss Dress

One for the Brits, but the First Lady makes up for it later! Sorry folks, but I have to give this one to the other team. I’m afraid to say that Mrs. Obama’s dainty print, retro full skirt Barbara Tfank dress reminds me of another First Lady, Mamie Eisenhower, and, in my opinion, is not…

Fashion Week Roundup- Best of New York, Spring 2011

Naveed Hussain has been taking a breathe and pondering New York Fashion Week- not as piece by piece show, but what stood out above the NYFW fray and complexities of the week. — S.H.We’ve been doing a lot of whining at the pace and scale of fashion in this day and age of globalism and an unsteady economy.Fashion today has become a world-wide beast, it’s everywhere, and isn’t that a good thing? Shouldn’t this mean we are all sitting at home with a closet full of the best we can buy? Okay well, that is possible, but we think it’s coming at a great cost in the long run. Most importantly, there is too much fashion too fast.Fashion is now rotating on a two month scale and frankly, by the time the items hit the shelves, we cannot even remember them. There was a time when we could spot something a mile away and tell you it’s label.Today, we look at the calenders each season and cannot pronounce half of the names on it, and now you can supposedly buy fashion on the Home Shopping Network & at J.Crew. This was not possible ten years ago and it is still not today.>> MORE: Fashion Shows and Runway Reviews

Fashion Downsizing with Six Items or Less is the Antidote to Haul Videos

I have to admit that I find the shopping haul video trend rather disquieting.Even though I am in fashion business and have overstuffed closets, it’s jarring for me to watch a video of someone sitting in front of her computer and gushing over her latest shopaholic purchase of the day, whether it be a glossy new lipstick or a cute top.In a time of economic restraint for most, it’s fascinating to me as to how there are hoards of fashionistas obsessed in the gorging of the latest fast-fashion cheapie trend rather than understanding that style is the amalgamation of the sum of its parts and not the collection of a batch of hit and miss items. In this otherwise fast-fashion, instant gratification obsessed society, a couple of social network friends inadvertently created the global month-long project, sixitemsorless.com.The Six Items or Less collective participants choose six (and only six) items of clothing and pledge to wear only those six items of clothing for a month. They share their experiences on the site to see the freedom that a uniform brings and the creativity that it can spark. It is the ultimate in the “what NOT to wear” philosophy and very similar to the less but more of the right things aesthetic of French Chic.
