Cropped tops paired with flirty a-line skirts in an ode to retro Italian starlet style were de riguer on many of the Spring/Summer 2012 runways and were one of the season’s most surprising trends to take in considering that it takes not only confidence to pull off, but a killer, toned body as well.

While on a photo call in Berlin for her latest movie “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” actress Rooney Mara donned a simple, refined take on the trend from Miu Miu, making her the first to take a chance on highlighting her abs off the beach in a subtle mid-riff baring ensemble.

For her it works here because of the look’s bare, almost reduced statement while her crossed leg pose brings to mind the delicate stance of a dancer, making it look all the more naive rather than brazenly sexy. -Naveed Hussain
