Best of Haute Couture Fall 2010 – The Glamour, The Fantasy, The Allure

As we prepare for the Spring 11 Fashion Weeks, we reflect the unimaginable beauty of what was Haute Couture Fall 2010 Naveed Hussain has spent some time digesting the magnificence of all that is available for only a privileged few. Haute Couture has been a tireless subject of debate. While many like to continually point out it's weak sales across the board and diminishing relevance in society. Although that may be the case, wasn't it always? Isn't couture about that unattainable and highly elusive luxury item we all like to dream of having? Hasn't globalism made "luxury" too readily attainable? The nine designers who showed for Haute Couture Fall 2010 clearly understand the craft beautifully. However, there were four contributions

Humor Chic

Witty, cheeky, brilliant, and VERY fashionable It's funny how the fashion flock can sometimes take themselves so seriously. Add some tongue-in-cheek insider observations and it's Humor Chic! Karl Lagerfeld and Vivienne Westwood aleXsandro Palombo (yes, the a is small, the X is a capital as is the P to represent the Latin symbols for Pax Christi) likes to think of himself as the father of fashion satire. He has just the right amount of wit and whimsy to poke a very manicured finger right back at the fashion industry and have them smile all the better for it with Humor Chic, the world's first Daily Society Portrait blog. Palombo is a global foot soldier (Prada or Dior Homme, I wonder)

NY Fashion Week : Proenza Schouler Spring / Summer 2010

Proenza Schouler had a vision of a collection which I think they executed with sincerity and aplomb. They got it right with their beautifully casual Spring/Summer 2010 outing. Runway Review: Proenza Schouler has always been somewhat of an anomaly to me: Their collections are cool adaptations of what many a downtown girl would love to see on herself. Yet, when the clothes hit the racks they look uptown, cut for women of whatever age who live a leisurely life far north of "downtown". This, to me is tricky and a bit deceptive. That said, I understand the difference between the illusion created on the runway and the reality of the bottom line and the fact that not everyone out there can

Fashion’s Night Out from Giorgio Armani to Brad Boles

The fabulousness never ends… Dear Diary: Fashion’s Night Out started out as a must-see stop for me at the Giorgio Armani boutique to hear a special reading by Rosie O’Donnell from “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” a new play by Nora Ephron and Della Ephron, based on the book by Ilene Beckerman. The evening instead turned into my own version of loving, loss, and what I wore! I have to admit that unless it’s embedded in my brain from some cosmic cryptoid, there is a very good chance that I will end up at the wrong address on the wrong date. Starting my evening out with all good intentions downtown, I found myself weighing through the gang of girls

Oscar fashion strikes gold…

It's lucky sevens for the 77th Academy Awards Oscar Fashion 2005   Frankly, I miss Cher. I really did like Bjork's wacky bird dress. And all the other Academy Award getups that may not have been politically fashionably correct, but sure did show off the wearer's personality. It gets terribly boring to spot stars decked out as a clone of their stylist's fashion connections with not an iota of their own personal style in play. Instead of seeing who is wearing what dress it too frequently becomes what dress is wearing which star. Worse off, while glamorous they may want to appear, the celebs look darn uncomfortable--- awkward is clearly not chic! Thankfully, this year's Oscar fashion, while heavy on

The top 10 fresh Fall 2002 trends that are not in your working wardrobe... promise! Dear Sharon: My wardrobe is full of great basicsů I love well-cut black clothes. I also have a slew of peasant styles from last season that I am completely sick of, besides, I think, they are on their way out of fashion anyway. I want something new to zip up my everyday fall wardrobe, but not a trend that's so saturated, like that peasant thing again, that I see my look

Turn Back, Go Forward…

designer vintage clothing redux Vintage hungry fashionistas get what they want- designer reissues! When Mom tells you that she once had a dress just like that, she's not kidding. In effort to keep up with vintage starving fashionistas, European designers and activewear manufactures are "reissuing" their old styles in limited editions. Last month, Yves Saint Laurent Couture in Paris offered a numbered copy of Mr. Saint Laurent's famous 1966 "le smoking" women's tuxedo for a modern-day price of about $6,300, reports WWD. Sonia Rykiel is introducing a "Modern Vintage" collection for fall with a limited run of archival favorites. Adidas, Levi's, Lacoste, and Valentino will also be reissuing. Norma Kamali has been at it for a while. When other designers
